Oxford Ale House

Oxford Ale House, (or Oxford Grille) 32 Church St. Corner Palmer & Church streets.

Since it served alcohol while Club 47 could not, the Oxford Ale House (or Oxford Grille) quickly became the unofficial hangout (and office) for the managers of Club 47. It was close enough to the Club that performers or club-goers could pop out for a drink between sets, and people often made the Ale House their “last call” for night. When it burned down in the late 1960s, some took it as a sign that the physical and atmospheric landscape of the Cambridge folk scene was changing: the years-long party was coming to a close.
