Historic buildings like the Hooper-Lee-Nichols House require careful maintenance! If you’ve visited our headquarters at 159 Brattle Street, you’ve likely seen our mid-19th C. scenic wallpaper. Right now there is a bit of mold growth on the inside of the special plexiglass covering, but don’t worry! Our Collections Committee is on the case.
We’ve met with a conservator to determine the best solution, and will soon be removing the plexiglass for a thorough cleaning. In the meantime, we’re tracking the growth and implementing new procedures to monitor the moisture in this wall, and throughout the house!

Our History Tour is fast approaching! Have you registered? Head to our bio for the link to next Thursday’s tour. Hoping to join us on Saturday instead? Head to bit.ly/HistTour2 ———— Join Cambridge Historical Society intern Amelia Zurcher as she leads a walking tour through Central Square!
This tour looks at Central Square and its surrounding neighborhoods as sites of tremendous social and political activity, where activists sought to achieve visions of affordable housing and food, equal representation, civil rights, and global peace. Through exploration of settings of debate, protest, community service, and organizing, both past and ongoing, the walking tour traces histories of activism in Central Square from the 1960s and 1970s to the present era to understand how this area has historically sparked and supported such community efforts.

We invite you to join us on Tuesday, June 25th for Cambridge Historical Society’s second History Café of 2019, where scholars Stephen Berrey and Tatiana Cruz will help us define "difficult histories," who they are difficult for, and reflect on ways to grapple with them. Register for the event using the link in our bio.
Professor Berrey’s expertise on the history of blackface and minstrelry is just one example of the difficult stories we may encounter in our families, in our communities, and in the news. How do we deal with the tough stuff of history? Using blackface as a lens to engage with challenging histories, including our own personal or family histories, Berrey and Cruz will provide historical context, both nationally and locally, and invite the audience to share how they wrestle with examples in their own lives.

We are honored to hold this event at the First Church in Cambridge, where Reverend Dan Smith and congregants are currently exploring the church's slaveholding past through remembrance and reparation.
